Super 55 Outboard Motors

Manufacture Date Range: Mid-Late 1950’s

  • The Super 55 “Super Outboard Motor” is one of a few motor lines that carry the “SUPER” name in their branding. The oldest or first versions of these Super 55 motors have battery terminal posts with knurled wire nuts on a banded faceplate. These early motors came in two cowl color versions - one red and one green. Although these motors were never granted rights to the Mercury name or branding, the manufacture bowered a lot of styling form the early Mercury motor designs and logo. The “Super 55” Mercury-style “airplane” decal on each side of the cowl remained unchanged through all years of production for this line of motors. All production years of these motors came with very similar silver lower portion and a tiller arm extending from the front of the cowl above the transom bracket. The transom bracket itself was a single screws and cup set up with multi-angle and pitch articulation. Both the red and green terminal-post versions of this motor came in a brightly colored blue and white box with motor graphics on the front featuring the red cowl and silver lower. The motor graphics on the correct box for the early versions of this motor show the post terminals on the faceplate. There are no manufacturing marks on the box or motors other than “Japan” but, given the similar castings found on other motors, it is presumed that these Super 55 motors were produced by the Sekai Seisakusho company in Japan during the mid-late 1950’s. Although these motors are very rare and have many Mercury branding and styling traits, currently they do not demand similarly high values as seen for other rare Mercury motors. These motors are still semi-unknown to the collecting community.

    • Single transom screw and cup

    • All metal construction

  • The Super 55 “Super Outboard Motor” is one of a few motor lines that carry the “SUPER” name in their branding. Later versions of the Super 55 motors have a smooth faceplate with a thin spar that wraps onto the top of the cowl. Instead of terminal-posts for the battery hookup, these motors came with attached blue and red battery wires coming from the back of the motor under the tray. These later versions came in three cowl color variations – red, green and orange. The red and green versions are similar in rarity with the orange version being the rarest of the battery wired versions but, not as rare as either terminal-post versions.
